Animal enthusiasts should take note about abandoned homes. The rising foreclosure rates have lead to rising pet abandonment rates. Leaving animals behind with a foreclosed home is happening more frequently. Sadly, the pets aren't usually discovered until it's too late.
Financial woes bring out the worst in people, but leaving a live animal in an abandoned home is sick and should be a federal offense. WoodTV in Grand Rapids, Michigan reported the tragedies that are occurring in the nation's 5th highest foreclosure rate state.
Michigan is still far below the top 2 foreclosure rate states of California, 71,817, and Florida, 47,069, with 17,574 last reported foreclosures, according to Realtytrac.com. The lowest rates occur in Vermont, 15, and South Dakota, 14.
Drew Campanelli who works with the Great Lakes Property Services, a company that manages foreclosed properties and gets them ready for resale. discussed the tragic pet issue with WoodTV. "We were at a home last week where there were 10 cats that were left for dead," he stated.
Any animals that are found deceased are the responsibility of the company, but live animals are given to the Humane Society. "The poor animals are freezing," he stated. "They're dying of hunger (and) starvation." Animal Network claims 77 percent of animals brought to shelters are killed.
There is nothing wrong with giving up a pet if an owner can't afford them. Abandoning a pet is a terrible thing to do, so try calling family or friends to adopt the pet, bring the pet to shelters that don't kill unwanted animals, hang up flayers for adoption explaining the situation or talk to neighbors. No animal should suffer because of bad finances.
