Cell Phone Price Competition Heats up

There is good news for consumers: cell phone companies are finally beginning to drop prices. The competition over pricing plans between AT&T and Verizon has resulted in several new tweaks in each companies pricing plan.

The new pricing plans went live on Monday. The first target of the new plans is for unlimited cell phone plans. Both Verizon and AT&T now offers price cuts for those customers with unlimited plans. This includes both unlimited voice and data.

However, the price cuts may not be so great for everyone. The companies are now offering data plans to users who previously had none. This means that customers who accept the terms will actually be adding a data charge to their plan.

Verizon’s plan will charge $70 a month for the unlimited plan. This is down from $100 a month. AT&T matched Verizon’s plan. The move is an extension of the current TV commercial battle that pits Verizon’s 3G coverage against AT&T’s. Naturally, each say their own coverage is better. AT&T has even sued Verizon for making false claims.

Both have also included a kind of family plan that will cost $119.99 a month. Lines can be added to Verizon for $9.99 each. AT&T, however, said the cost of additional lines will vary depending on the type of plan subscribed to.

Text messaging rates still have not changed, but data plans are now required for customers owning midrange phones, or phones that have multimedia or quick messaging. Smartphone customers may also change plans, however data plans for smartphones remain the same.

Consumers should look at their service plans carefully. Both Verizon and AT&T have provided extra help when looking to change cell phone plans.
