With the continued chatter about health care reform, it is easy to forget what health insurance options are currently out there. There are a number of options, however, not all health insurance plans are made to be equal. Some offer limited coverage that may hurt more than they help.
Americans who are uninsured but run into the bad fortune of being injured on the job, behind the wheel, or while playing sports have limited options when in comes to health insurance coverage. One option is a health discount card which severely restricts coverage.
The health discount card claims to offer discounts for medical services, but in reality, those discounts are almost impossible to get. Health discount cards are not accepted in many facilities, and will more often than not leave Americans with higher bills and increasing debt.
Another option is the limited benefit health care plan. This might as well be called the limited coverage plan. The plan is offered by America Medical and Life Insurance and is frequently shown on television. The ads claim that the insurance costs is only around $5 a day.
Moreover, limited health insurance covers only the bare minimum. For instance, $1000 is paid out for a hospital stay; however, stays usually cost upwards of $5,0000. Medical services follow the same trend. Tests that costs hundreds of dollars are only covered by a measly $100 pay out.
Health insurance coverage is an expensive, however important asset to have. Americans often shirk at the expense, claiming it too much for a healthy person to pay. However, sickness can come up any time and accidents do happen. When there is an emergency, the burden of medical expenses can be too great.
Even with limited benefit coverage, medical care is not cheap. When Americans look for health insurance coverage, they out to look out for plans that offer limited benefits and false promises. The consequences of a health insurance plan with little coverage are, in the long run, not worth it.
