Job Hunters Look Locally For Career Advice

The recession has hit job markets worldwide. This means more job applicants for fewer jobs. On the upside, this has brought plenty of traffic to job recruitment websites like CareerBuilder or Monster.com. However, a new study in the UK indicates that residents actually preferred going to local media outlets over bigger media sites such as Monster.

Although the study was conducted in London, the evidence holds true for citizens across the pond. While many Americans flock to websites like Craigslist or CareerBuilder, there seems to a stronger pull towards local media like TV stations or local newspaper’s online sites.

For one, Americans simply do not want to be scammed. Large job portals are infamous for listing bogus jobs. Applicants respond to that seemingly perfect dream job only to be asked to give out sensitive information or go to another, suspiciously convenient website to apply.
Scams gained in popularity once the credit crunch hit. One of the popular scams to look out for is the promise of work after consumers purchased equipment or “training” materials. The consumer received the goods, most of the time, but never got the job.

Another particularly rampant and devious scheme involves redirecting citizens to a credit check website. Here, potential employees are told to enter in their credit details in order to be approved for employment. Little do they know, that the company actually starts charging them a monthly fee for their effort. Of course, there was no real job.

Local media offers a more personal approach too. They list jobs that are available within the local economy. People are more apt to apply to jobs they recognize rather than a nameless corporation with a generic job title. Applying for jobs is a lengthy process. It’s already difficult enough to receive ‘no’s’ from real companies than to face rejection from scam companies.

The job market is steadily looking more optimistic. Potential applicants can find a number of career counseling centers to help them with the job hunt. Most cities offer many career relataed resources and free career couching for the unemployed. There are also a number of job websites that offer good career advice.
