Japanese cosmetic giant Shiseido, recently launched an ultra high-tech way of applying makeup. The technology is called Digital Cosmetic Mirrors and uses so-called ‘augmented reality’ technology that allows women to see what certain products look like on them before actually purchasing.
Designed by Shiseido, the Digital Cosmetic Mirror is essentially a monitor that scans one’s face and than offers makeup and skin product recommendations based on face and skin type. The mirror lets users choose from different colors and shades and shows what they would look like with those products on.
It produces what is called an augmented reality effect. This is when a person views live or indirect images of a real world environment through a monitor or tv or computer. It essentially combines real world imagery with virtual imagery.
Each recommendation from the mirror is tailored to the individuals. The results are all real-time and instant. Users no longer have to sit through arduous sessions with questionable trained cosmetics counter advisor.
Now, consumers can do away with the samples and choose makeup they want without having somebody else interfere (notwithstanding boyfriends and husbands, of course). Once the makeup has been digitally applied, the monitor offers users a digital printout with all of its recommendations.
The Digital Cosmetic Mirrors are currently only in operation in Japan, but will soon be available for use abroad. The possibilities of the technology on the cosmetics industry are numerous. Buying makeup, for one, will never be the same and it will be a lot easier for women to decide what looks good and what doesn’t. For makeup makers, it means less returns and more business.
