The birth of a baby usually does not make national news. However, an 11 year old girl who gives birth will make anyone do a double take. Today, an 11 year old girl did indeed give birth to a baby boy. Her identity has been protected for privacy reasons. However, it is known that she is from the Northeast.
The news comes soon after reports that a 9 year old in Changchun, China recently gave birth as well. She was eight and a half months pregnant. The father, however, has not yet been determined.
Children giving birth to children, while unusual is not new. In fact, the youngest pregnancy on record belongs to a girl of only five. Linda Medina of Peru gave birth at six years old in 1939 to a baby boy in Lima. The boy has reportedly grown up entirely normal.
The pregnancy naturally elicits many cries of disbelief as much as it does questions. Girls’ bodies are not equipped to give birth at that aged. They are simply not developed – fully grown, rather – and therefore face numerous health risks. Pre-teens face the possibility of vaginal injury, stunted growth, high blood pressure, and many developmental issues for the baby. Of course, there are also psychological issues to deal with.
The subject of pre-teen pregnancy is a sensitive one. However, despite the difficulties that lie ahead, the good news is that the baby was born without much complication and both mother and son are healthy.
