Google, Bing Pay Tribute to Earth Day

In honor of Earth Day, search engine giants Google and Bing have both featured an eco-themed design on their respective homepages. Google’s logo has transformed from the regular multicolored letters to a doodle of a green forest. Bing, meanwhile has a photo from the Earth Day photo contest winner.

The tradition of changing Google’s logo to what’s known as a Google Doodle goes back to 1998 during the Burning Man Festival. The doodle was actually designed by Google creators Sergey Brin and Larry Page, who wanted a way creative way to notify users that they were away in case servers crashed.

Subsequent Google Doodles were created by an outside contractor, and then by then-intern Dennis Hwang. Hwang is not the master Google Doodle designer, and has created a number of masterpieces celebrating everything from legos to to Valentine’s Day to Roald Dahl’s birthday.

This year’s Earth Day Google Doodle is a brilliant green forest, with the word Google appearing in the background as rays of light piercing the forest shade. Also featured are six variously colored parrots. By clicking on the Doodle, users will be brought to a page with random Earth Day related links.

Bing has created its own version of Doodle with its background photographs. For Earth Day, Bing held a photo contest for students. In all, 17,000 entries were reviewed and 12 finalists were selected. Each of the 12 photos are being featured on Bing during Earth week.

The winner of the photo contest was announced April 20. Alan Bosse, 18, of Gulf Coast Community College won for his work, “Passion and Bee,” which features an upclose still of a bee gathering nector from a purple passion fruit blossom. The photo was taken in Long Beach, Calif. Bosse won an HP Pavilion desktop for himself and 12 for his school as well as two printers, and three cameras. Second and third place winners also took home prizes.
