Ford Motor Company announced today that it will produce its next generation Ford Explorer at its Chicago Assembly Plant beginning in the fourth quarter of 2010.
Unlike the current Explorer, the new model will be a unibody design that is lighter weight and will offer at least 25 percent better fuel economy than the current model according to the company.
Ford previewed what the next Explorer might look like at the 2008 North American International Auto show with the Explorer America concept.
An interesting safety feature of the next Explorer will be inflatable seat belts for rear seat passengers. Ford says that the belts will help to spread crash forces over five times more area of the body than conventional seat belts.
The current Explorer is manufactured in Kentucky. After the Louisville facility produces the last of the current generation, it will be reconfigured to produce new vehicles based on Ford's global C-car (Focus, etc) platform in 2011.
