Chicago Mayor Daley Announces Major Change in 4th of July Fireworks

The 4th of July Fireworks Show in Chicago is a very big event for people from the Chicagoland area and for travelers. Fireworks magically light up the night time sky over the famous Chicago skyline. The Mayor's Office of Special Events has announced a major change in the fireworks schedule for 2010.

The City of Chicago Independence Day Fireworks Show has traditionally been held on July 3, over Grant Park on the Lake Michigan lakefront. The pyrotechniques have been held in conjunction with the Chicago Food Festival, 'Taste of Chicago,' which is held for several days leading up to July 4.

Huge crowds attend both the Taste of Chicago and the 4th of July Fireworks Show, causing traffic congestion and crowds. While the 4th of July events are designed as a family/community event, the crowds and travel time may discourage some people from attending the fireworks.

Mayor Daley announced that the Grant Park Fireworks Show on the night before Independence Day would be canceled. Replacing the one big fireworks show will be three smaller shows, including a show on the north side of Chicago, a show on the south side of Chicago and a show at Navy Pier on July 4th.

While there will undoubtedly be many who miss the big Independence Day extravaganza, Mayor Daley stated that by spreading out the fireworks shows and holding them in outlying neighborhood, people will be able to enjoy the show closer to their own home.
