If looking at the scale each morning is what has you motivated, you may want to check your primary weight loss tool. Recently, scientists have found evidence to support that weight isn't all that matters. Even if you are the "normal" weight, you could still be obese based on your body fat percentage - A revelation doctors are calling "normal weight obesity".
According to ABC News, as many as 30 million Americans who are considered to be an average weight by doctors may actually have what scientists call "normal weight obesity".
Based on facts and draws from a a recent study by the Mayo Clinic. The bodies of those in the study are said to "behave like they are obese, but they are not," said Dr. Lopez-Jimenes, lead researcher and cardiologist.
Over nine years of research was conducted on a pool of participants and Dr. Lopez-Jimenes feels the newfound oxy-moron is linked to cholesterol - Something a scale won't detect and what is revelation in the "normal weight obesity" phenomenon.
In a report from the Wall Street Journal, Equinox gyms was interviewed about their continued use of body-fat assessments as a "common feature" for establishing a wellness exam in exercising individuals.
"This is a culture obsessed with weight, but very little attention is paid to the composition of that weight," the Journal quoted Geralyn Coopersmith, an exercise physiologist and senior national manager for Equinox's training program, as saying.
Among other mentions on "normal weight obesity" in the study include the following key points:
- High body fat among "normal-weight" men and women was associated with an increase in the risk for metabolic syndrome - "a cluster of abnormalities including elevated blood sugar and blood pressure".
- For women, high body fat linked to an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease.
- Both men and women had higher levels of abnormal cholesterol
- Men with higher body fat percentages were more likely to develop high blood pressure.
