The British PM and Afghan President Hamid Karzai have (among other world leaders), come up with a plan that may or many not start to curtail the violence in Afghanistan. In short, hire them and give them a meaningful job with real earnings.
A gathering in Lancaster House today with over 60 delegations from nations of the world was set to propose a means to an end and an exit strategy that will give the Afghan Government and Military return of power in time.
The delegation(s)are expected to agree on a $500 Million fund over 5 years that will in essence, bribe the would be terrorists who are just on their Jihad due to lack of options. It has already been noted that Britain and Germany have already pledged their support as has Japan who is said to be pledging the brunt of the funds.
Meeting goers aside from President Karzai are said to include US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, The UN Secretary General and will be chaired by British Foreign Secretary, David Miliband.
The reasoning behind this "bribing fund" is that many believe that recent recruits to the Taliban do so because of lack of options. The fund which President Karzai will manage is said to have use by offering those men/women positions as guards and/or in agriculture.
Richard Holbrooke, the U.S. special representative to Afghanistan and Pakistan concluded; "The overwhelming majority of these people are not ideological supporters of Mullah Omar [the fugitive Taliban leader] and Al Qaeda. Based on interviews with prisoners, returnees, experts, there must be at least 70 percent of these people who are not fighting for anything to do with those causes."
Right or wrong, this may be a possibility. The Taliban, is just another gang that brain washes its members. Well like many gang members here in the US, give them meaningful jobs and earnings, and they may just succeed in what ever they do.
