Will Mel Gibson 'Edge' out 'Avatar' this weekend?

If James Cameron's "Avatar" takes the top box office slot this weekend it will be the seventh time the sci-fi flick accomplished that feat. However, those tall blue aliens have competition this time from Mel Gibson's return to the screen after a seven year hiatus in the action thriller "Edge of Darkness."

Gibson portrays a rough around the edges Boston detective, Tom Craven. Craven is a dedicated parent, bonded deeply with his daughter, Emma (Bojana Novakovic), who returns home with a unsettling secret. As Emma is about to reveal everything to her doting dad, she is murdered right in front of her father, who dedicates himself fully to the task of finding the killer. "I’m a guy with nothing to lose,” Mel Gibson as Craven menacingly warns suspects.

The actor has aged since film goers have seen him last. The last time Gibson had a starring role in a movie was 2002's "Signs."

But the older more leathered Mel fits in perfectly with Craven’s craggy character.

Gibson fans present a pent-up demand, and “Edge” presents an intense suspense and action offering reminiscent of Gibson’s “Payback” character.

Box office watchers predict that if the Gibson film hits the mid twenty million dollar mark is could knock “Avatar” off its number one streak.

"When in Rome," a Disney chick flick starring Kristen Bell ("Couples Retreat") and Josh Duhamel ("Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen"), will likely finish in the top three.

"Avatar" will probably not be able to have as long a winning streak as Cameron’s other blockbuster "Titanic's" 15-week run in 1997-98.

Other new releases this weekend include "Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief," "Valentine's Day" and "The Wolfman."
