Panasonic To Convert Cox Television Stations To P2 HD

Panasonic announced today that Atlanta-based Cox Television will extend conversion of newsgathering operations at its television stations to the P2 HD solid-state memory recording system.

Cox Television operates 15 television stations, three national television sales representation firms and a Washington, D.C. news bureau. Cox Television is a subsidiary of Cox Enterprises, Inc., one of the nation's leading media companies and providers of automotive services.

The first two stations to be outfitted with DVCPRO P2 HD equipment will be WSOC-TV, the ABC affiliate in Charlotte, N.C., and WSB-TV, the ABC affiliate in Atlanta, Ga. Beginning January 2007, both stations are slated to equip their photographers with fully-equipped AJ-HPX2000 shoulder-mount, multi-format 2/3" P2 HD camcorders.

"Cox has experienced very positive results with P2 and our stations have enjoyed P2's exceptional reliability, improved image quality and significant workflow benefits. We made the decision to upgrade to P2 HD for all Betacam SX replacements as we extend our transition to HD and 16:9 newsgathering capabilities," said Sterling Davis, Vice President of Engineering, Cox Broadcasting.

John Baisley, President, Panasonic Broadcast, said, "Cox Television entrusted its stations' electronic newsgathering to DVCPRO P2 almost two years ago and has experienced excellent results. We are delighted that Cox has the confidence to commit to P2 HD for its high definition acquisition."

"More than 140 U.S. television stations have adopted P2 because of its high reliability, flexibility and outstanding workflow benefits. P2 HD provides all the benefits of solid-state acquisition and IT workflow in high definition, plus it is compatible with all existing DVCPRO formats and will support the highly-efficient AVC-Intra HD codec in the near future."

P2 HD products offer solid-state high definition recording without the mechanical wear and environmental limitations of tape, hard disk, and optical disc based systems. P2 HD ensures the highest reliability, especially in challenging conditions of extreme temperature range, shock, and vibration. New P2 HD products - AJ-HPX2000 2/3" HD/SD camcorder and AJ-HPM100 Mobile recorder/player -- provides a significant reduction in maintenance costs, longer useful product life, and immediate access to recorded video (no need to digitize, ingest or create proxy video files) and metadata. P-2 HD has dual HD codec capability - DVCPRO 25/50/HD and AVC-Intra, the professional intra-frame implementation of H.264, a state-of-the-art video codec. AVC-Intra offers comparable DVCPRO HD quality at half the bit rate, doubling the recording time per P2 card while lowering distribution costs and storage times. P2 HD provides the reliability of solid-state production, the immediate connectivity to existing IT infrastructures; the speed, ease of use and portability of P2 cards; and the interoperability with leading NLE systems.
