Bristol Wi-Fi network 'to be most inclusive'

Bristol City Council has claimed that its new Wi-Fi network will be the most inclusive in Britain.

The new wireless network, which promises to offer free Internet access, will "make a difference to the people of Bristol", said council leader Barbara Janke.

"It can help us improve council services, enable local businesses to become even more competitive and remove some of the obstacles that stop people in disadvantaged communities accessing the information and services they need," she remarked.

The official added that high-quality, citywide internet access would boost the city's economic performance, along with that of the surrounding region.

Covering six kilometres of the city centre, the new Wi-Fi network will be provided by Cityspace, covering communities, transport networks and business areas.

Earlier this year, a similar scheme was launched in Norwich, with free Wi-Fi access to users.

UK TV channel Five's The Gadget Show has recently launched an online petition, calling for the government to provide free wireless Internet access in all major cities and towns.
