Both teams know each other well and 9 of the 23 men on the American squad play for English teams during the regular season. The match will be the equivalent of foe meets friend or vice versa.
The coveted World Cup has always eluded the Americans who came close in 2002 when they were eliminated in the quarter finals in Brazil. Since then soccer has become more popular than ever and thousands of fans have descended upon South Africa to root for their favorite team.
Remember the 1950 World Cup games where the US upset rival England with a 1-0 win, which is considered the biggest upset ever in soccer history. Can Team USA do it again as they go up against great players such as John Terry, Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney?
The US national soccer team who arrived in Johannesburg on June 01st has been practicing hard around its star players. Goalie Tim Howard, Landon Donovan, Jozy Altidore and Maurice Edu are counted among the strongest players on the team.
A first match between two rivals is never disappointing no matter who wins in the end. It is expected that both teams will easily advance to the second round. After that it is anybody’s guess how far Team USA can go this time but the odds of winning the World Cup are stacked up against them.
A miracle during the competition will be needed to bring home the gold.
