Tea Party Rally Costs Taxpayers $14,000

Michael Santo's picture

The Tea Party movement makes government spending the crux of its platform. Despite this, however, a Tea Party rally from last November cost U.S. taxpayers nearly $14,000.

The rally, held in Washington, D.C. last November, was "hosted" by Reps Michele Bachmann (MN), Tom Price (GA), Todd Akin (MO) and Steve King (IA). The reps split the bill of $13,600 (for a private company to arrange staging and a sound system).

The representatives used their official congressional member allowances to do so. While certainly unseemly for an anti-spending movement, it reportedly falls within the lines of the use of their budgets. Stan Brand, a former general counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives.said:

"Unless it's billed as a campaign event, or campaign donations are solicited, or there's a concerted program of endorsements for candidates based on party affiliation, I don't think that they ran into any issues."

However, this isn't the only unseemly spending by the GOP brought to light of late. In late March, a GOP staffer was fired after a nearly $2,000 visit to a strip club.

First they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they fight you. Then you win. - Mohandas Gandhi In New Hampshire, the former chairwoman of the state Democrat Party is recruiting saboteurs to show up at Tea Parties. Former Democratic State Party Chairman Kathy Sullivan ... has been calling and e-mailing liberal activists trying to get them to attend tea parties in different parts of the state and hold signs denying the authenticity of President Barack Obama's birth certificate and make racially disparaging comments to reporters. If the Tea Parties really were full of racists and idiots, the Dramacrats wouldn't have to be recruiting people to fake it, would they?

$14,000 huh? Let's compare apples to apples. What do you suppose the taxpayers had to pay just to clean up the streets of DC after the inauguration in 2008? If you recall, it looked very much like a trash dump. The Tea Party attendees didn't leave so much as a gum wrapper on the streets! Does this say something about the class, love of country and decency of people who attended each of these events? Those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

None of what you say matters. Nobody is taking the teaparties seriously. it's just a crowd of losers who are going to vote republican regardless. Why is that so obvious? Because these folks never protested Bush. You shouldn't have let your "movement" get hijacked by Foxnews. You thought it would bring you credibility, but instead it destroyed what little bit you had. Now you're done. it's over.
