Here on Long Island, we are noticing some families are looking for homes so that they can bring the generations together. Two master sized bedrooms are becoming popular for families to cohabitate. More and more people are looking for homes where blended families can live and share the expense of home ownership.
Over the past couple of years, there has been an increase in home buyers looking for multi-generational living arrangements. We have worked with young adults now living with their parents, and seniors living or wanting to live with their children. This is an attractive dynamic for many families.
There can be many cost-effective benefits when generations move together, rather than purchasing separately. We have seen wonderful outcomes with multi-generational living. However, we have also seen some instances where it was challenging and not such a good idea. It is important to consider all issues before making the decision to have generations live together. Situations can change so open communication is a good idea to have a plan in place to ensure the family stays strong through any changes. Discuss in advance the advantages and disadvantages so there is no misunderstandings later on.
If your part of the "Sandwich Generation, you’ll not only be able to pool your family's resources, you'll also have the peace of mind that all of your family is safe and secure.
