Aspex gallery in Portsmouth has announced the eight artists on the shortlist for its biennial open submission, EMERGENCY³. It's the third biennial at the gallery, which specialises in supporting contemporary artists in the early stages of their career.

The Henry Moore Institute in Leeds is presenting a major exhibition of the early works of German conceptual artist Thomas Schütte (1954-). Fake/Function, which runs until January 6 2008, collects Schütte's prodigious work at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, where he studied under renowned abstract painter Gerhard Richter.

The first ever exhibition of Flemish paintings from the Royal Collection is showing at The Queen's Gallery in the Palace of Holyrood house, Edinburgh. Bruegel to Rubens: Masters of Flemish Painting runs until April 6 2008 and brings together 51 works from the 15th to 17th centuries, including masterpieces by Rubens, Van Dyck, Jan Brueghel, Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Hans Memling.

The Hayward Gallery at London's Southbank Centre is staging the first major museum survey to explore the use and translation of photographic imagery. The Painting of Modern Life runs until December 30 2007 and features some 100 paintings from the last five decades.

Frieze Art Fair will take over a chunk of Regent's Park in London from October 11-14 2007, where wealthy collectors will descend to snap up works from the 150 participating galleries.
