Dell's first Android smartphone, the Dell Mini 3, was officially announced by the company on Friday. Surprisingly, the company added that the device will first appear in China (China Mobile or CMCC) and Brazil (Claro).

For those who love tech there's nothing like a launch day. For those who adore tech, there's nothing like a launch Midnight. Thus, the scene at Verizon wireless stores in East Coast centers. Reportedly, more than a hundred people were lined up at midnight Thursday night outside a Verizon Wireless store in midtown Manhattan to be among the first to buy the new Motorola Droid.

A double set of bad news sent Garmin stock tumbling on Wednesday. Not only did rival Tom Tom release a good earnings report, Garmin also had the bad luck of seeing an announcement regarding a hot new Droid phone that will challenge its standalone GPS units.

Verizon's recent Droid ad slammed the iPhone, but was coy about a Droid release date, saying only November. However, a little decoding seems to indicate that's conservative.

Over the past few weeks, Verizon has been slamming the iPhone with ads such as "there's a map for that," which points out the well-publicized issues with the iPhone and AT&T's network. They've also been announcing a series of Google Android phones, and their latest spot (nicknamed iDroid or simply the Droid commercial), about the Verizon Droid device, hits the iPhone right where it iCan.

Motorola, once a rising star among handset manufacturers that has met with tough times, on Thursday announced, in concert with carrier T-Mobile, its first Android phone, the Motorola Cliq. It's hard to to believe the company controlled 16.1% of the global handset market just two years ago. Now? Just 6.5%.

Google today announced the Latitude feature, an addition to its Google Mobile application, which will allow you to track the location of your friends. Previously you were able to track yourself, via the My Location feature added in late 2007.

Well, not really that bargain-basement, but certainly a good discount. Wal-Mart has confirmed that on Wednesday, its stores will start begin selling the T-Mobile G1 phone at a discounted price ... $148.88 with a 2-year agreement (natch). This is $31.11 off the regular price, but more impressively, it's slightly more than 25% off.

On Wednesday, T-Mobile's G1 Android-based phone made its retail appearance (it was previously only available via pre-order to existing T-Mobile customers). T-Mobile opened all of its retail storefronts at 8 AM, anticipating increased demand.

Tuesday morning in New York City, T-Mobile and Google held their much anticipated launch event of the first Android phone, the T-Mobile G1. While the name of the device isn't as snappy as say, iPhone, and while it's unlikely the device is going to generate the buzz of thatdevice, there open-source nature of the device OS and the backing of many partners in the Open Handset Alliance, is bound to give this device legs.
