The Brandywine River Museum presents Jamie Wyeth--Seven Deadly Sins, a major exhibition of new works inspired by a traditional concept of human transgressions. With characteristic imagination, Wyeth has depicted the Seven Deadly Sins in a series of paintings with raucous, scavenging seabirds as emblems of human failings.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art will present a major traveling retrospective celebrating the extraordinary life and work of Arshile Gorky (American, born Armenia, c.1904-1948), a seminal figure in the movement towards gestural abstraction that would transform American art in the years after World War II.

The Museum of Modern Art presents the theatrical premiere of Bob Byington’s slacker comedy Harmony and Me (2009), from September 18 through 24, 2009, in The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters. Michael Almereyda’s most recent feature film, Paradise (2009), is presented at The Museum of Modern Art in a weeklong engagement in The Roy and Niuta Titus Theater 2 from September 24 through 30, 2009. The year 2009 marks the bicentennial of the birth of Abraham Lincoln, and the Chicago History Museum is proud to play a major role in presenting a year-long celebration highlighting his historic contributions to America. The celebratory year will climax with two exhibitions opening on October 10 that explore the lives and impact of two great presidents who led their nation during turbulent times: Abraham Lincoln of the United States and Benito Juarez of Mexico.

The unique vision of artist, adventurer and author Rockwell Kent will be on view at the Brandywine River Museum this fall in Intrepid and Inventive: Illustrations by Rockwell Kent. The exhibition features more than 80 drawings, wood engravings, lithographs and paintings inspired by his travels, including illustrations for books and magazines.

Tate announced that Damien Hirst’s large vitrine work, The Child’s Dream 2008, will go on show at Tate St Ives this autumn. The work, which comprises a 'unicorn' in a gold-plated vitrine of formaldehyde, will be one of the highlights of the exhibition The Dark Monarch: Magic and Modernity in British Art opening on 10 October 2009.

Memory (2008), a major new site-specific sculpture installation by leading international artist Anish Kapoor, will be on view at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum from October 21, 2009, to March 28, 2010 as part of the Deutsche Bank Series at the Guggenheim.

The Denver Art Museum (DAM) kicks off the month’s final Friday night with its mixed-media event series Untitled, where visitors can expect local music, DJs, detours, art making and munchies. On Friday, August 28, from 6 to 10 p.m., Untitled #24 (Crossbones) goes to the dark side with Ouija boards, bedazzled bone art and creepy tales.
