Roman Emperor Hadrian Returns To Britain

Following on from the unprecedented success of 'The First Emperor', the British Museum's major exhibition for 2008 will focus on another great world leader, the Roman Emperor Hadrian, from 24 July to 26 October 2008. Hadrian: Empire and Conflict, supported by BP, will be the first major show dedicated solely to the life and legacy of Hadrian who ruled the Roman Empire at its height between AD117 – 138.


American Scene: Prints From Hopper To Pollock

The American Scene will feature spectacular images of American society and culture made during a period of great social and political change from the early 1900s to 1960. Featuring 147 works by 74 artists, the exhibition includes the work of John Sloan, Edward Hopper, Josef Albers, Louise Bourgeois, Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock, running from 10 April to 7 September 2008.


Korean Moon Jar At British Museum

British Museum displays The Korean Moon Jar through 21 October 2007. This display focuses on a large, white porcelain jar considered a masterpiece of Korean art. Unique to Korea, the moon jars were made in the late to mid 17th to mid-18th century and were used for storing rice, soy sauce, alcohol and sometimes displaying flowers.


China’s Terracotta Army At British Museum

The First Emperor: China’s Terracotta Army – a major loan exhibition - will open at the British Museum on 13 September 2007. The exhibition will feature the largest group of important objects relating to the First Emperor ever to be loaned abroad by the Museum of the Terracotta Army and the Cultural Relics Bureau of Shaanxi Province in Xi’an, China.

The British Museum is delighted to announce the acquisition of a pair of delicate chocolate cups once owned by the first Viscount Palmerston. The cups are part of an unique collection of historic English silver and gold formed by Sir Ernest Cassel (1852-1921).

British Museum Presents England's First View Of America

John White, a gentleman and artist, was largely responsible for shaping England's first view of America, though few are familiar with his name. In the 1580s, White sailed with the earliest expeditions to Virginia and produced a series of amazing watercolours that documented the complex and sophisticated culture of the North Carolina Algonquian Indians and the local flora and fauna. These drawings are the only surviving original visual record of this early period of America's history.



The Past From Above

The first major photographic exhibition at the British Museum presents extraordinary aerial photographs of archaeological and heritage sites from across the globe taken by the Swiss photographer Georg Gerster. These awe-inspiring images range from natural phenomena such as Uluru in Australia to man-made wonders such as the Ziggurat of Ur in Iraq or the Great Wall of China and will allow visitors to take a 'world tour' of the great monuments of human civilisation.
