A fire broke out in a refugee camp in eastern Chad Friday, leaving 3,000 people homeless and injuring 10, according to the United Nations (UN) refugee agency United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Refugees have been living in the camp as a result of the conflict in the Darfur region of Sudan.

As Chad’s government tries to restore order in N’djamena following a rebel retreat to surrounding areas, life goes on in the refugee camps in eastern Chad. The camps, located 900 kilometers east of N’djamena near the border with Sudan’s Darfur, lost staff that was temporarily evacuated during last week’s rebel assault on the capital.

The government of Chad has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in the capital and six interior regions, in an effort to restore calm after a rebel offensive.

French Defense Minister Herve Morin is in Chad for a meeting with beleaguered President Idriss Deby, whose government has been holding off rebels threatening to take the capital.

After heavy weekend fighting, Chadian rebels have withdrawn from the capital, N’djamena. But thousands of refugees, expecting another military strike, have fled across Chad’s southern border into neighboring Cameroon. Rebel leaders in Chad are giving conflicting statements about a possible cease-fire, while Chad's government is declaring victory after rebels failed to take the capital N'Djamena in last week's fighting. Meanwhile, the president of former colonial power France, Nicolas Sarkozy, has said France is ready to do its duty to defend Chad's government if necessary. VOA's Nico Colombant reports from Dakar.

Despite the EU’s military mission to Chad being put on hold, Sweden continues to push for a UN mandate.

The United Nations Security Council held a rare Sunday evening session to discuss rebel efforts in Chad to overthrow the government. But as VOA's Margaret Besheer reports from U.N. headquarters in New York, the emergency meeting ended without any formal action.
