Angelina Jolie Discusses Plight of Iraqi Children

Actress Angelina Jolie has highlighted the plight of the some four million people who have been displaced by the ongoing violence in Iraq, saying about 50 percent of them are children. Speaking at a Council on Foreign Relations forum in Washington, Jolie said that while Iraq has a history of a high quality, free education system, millions of Iraqi children have little or no access to education today.

In a provocative new study appearing in the July issue of the Journal of Labor Economics, economists Elias Dinopoulous (University of Florida) and Laixun Zhao (Kobe University) formally analyze the effects of globalization on child labor. The authors find that emigration of unskilled adult workers from poor countries to rich countries increases the incidence of child labor.
