Conductor Thomas Wilkins, whose contributions to classical music are immeasurable both in Michigan and nationwide, will be honored this February with a special recognition award as part of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra's Classical Roots Concerts, which celebrate their 30th Anniversary.

A powerful pair of Grammy-nominated jazz artists, singer Tierney Sutton and pianist Jacky Terrasson, together with their bands, are poised to perform their live shows in Orchestra Hall at the Max M. Fisher Music Center for the first time on Friday, February 22. The double bill takes place at 8 p.m. and is part of the LaSalle Bank Paradise Jazz Series.

Detroit children will share their beliefs on diverse themes such as freedom, love, civil rights and world peace at the Youth Poetry Slam The Max. The Slam, presented by Starbucks Coffee and hosted by Kalimah Johnson of PicNap Poetry, takes place Saturday, February 9 in The Music Box at the Max M. Fisher Music Center. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., and the competition begins at 8 p.m.

Acclaimed jazz drummer Carl Allen joins conductor Rodney Whitaker and the young performers of the DSO's Civic Jazz Orchestra for a one-night only performance in Allesee Rehearsal Hall at the Max M. Fisher Music Center on Saturday, February 2 at 7 p.m.

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Gilbert Varga, will light up the Orchestra Hall stage with fanciful, dance-inspired music of four influential European composers from the 18th and 19th centuries. Ravel's Piano Concerto in G major, performed by dexterous pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, is the centerpiece of the concerts which also include Debussy's Danse, Kodály's Dances of Galantá and Bartók's The Miraculous Mandarin.

The incredible power of love will be expressed musically in Orchestra Hall as the Detroit Symphony Orchestra performs Berlioz's Romantic classic Symphonie Fantastique with celebrated conductor Charles Dutoit. The performances also feature Berlioz's Overture to Béatrice et Bénédict and Ravel's grand Piano Concerto in D minor (Left Hand Alone) with soloist Jean-Philippe Collard.
