Two men were using their bikes to cross Canada to raise money for diabetes research. Their mission ended on the Trans-Canada Highway by a Honda Civic car near Virden when a Honda Civic hit the men and two children.

Dave Gorman, one of Britain’s most successful comedians is appearing at the University of Dundee to talk about his new adventure and help raise funds to battle diabetes.

The Rotary Club of Dundee will present a cheque for £2,500 to the Diabetes Research Campaign tomorrow (Thurs) at 12.30pm, outside the Invercarse Hotel, Dundee. The President of Rotary Club Dundee, Derek Shaw, will present the cheque.

The University of Dundee’s Diabetes Research Campaign has been selected as the charity of choice for the inaugural Monikie 10km Race being held on Saturday 10th May 2008.

Diabetes researchers hope new funding will allow them to develop better treatments for adult and children sufferers. Scientists will use the new funds to move their research from mice into larger animals and then into human clinical trials.

Replacing faulty or missing cells with new insulin-making cells has been the object of diabetes research for the last decade. Past studies in tissue culture have suggested that one type of pancreas cell could be coaxed to transform into insulin-producing islet cells.
