First baby born from egg matured in laboratory

The first baby to be created from an egg that had been matured in the laboratory, frozen, thawed and then fertilised, has been born in Canada. Three other women are pregnant by the same process. The research was presented to the 23rd annual meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology today (Monday 2 July).

Wood ant queen has no egg-laying monopoly

The reproductive monopoly of the ant queen is not as strong as is often thought. Dr. Heikki Helanterд and Prof. Lotta Sundstrцm, biologists working at the University of Helsinki, Finland, investigated worker ovary development and egg laying in nine Northern European wood ant species of the genus Formica, and revealed wide spread reproductive endeavours by workers.
