Preliminary results in France show conservative Nicolas Sarkozy and Socialist Segolene Royal have won the first round of voting in the French presidential election. Nicolas Sarkozy, the former Interior Minister, held the lead with about 30 per cent of the vote. Segolene Royal trailed with about 25 percent. Anita Elash reports for VOA from Paris.

Nigeria: State of Emergency Declared in Ekiti State

The President of Nigeria, chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has declared a state of emergency in Ekiti state in the South Western region. He made the declaration in a national broadcast to the nation at 7 pm, Wednesday. The head of state reappointed retired Major-.Gen. Tunji Olurin as the sole administrator of the state until May 29, 2007.
