A man has abandoned his nine children at a hospital emergency room in Nebraska, but will not be prosecuted under Nebraska state law.

Outside the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) on Queen Street West in Toronto, mourners gathered Friday under a big oak tree on the front lawn to remember Esmin Elizabeth Green, who died in the waiting room of Brooklyn’s largest psychiatric hospital, nearly an hour before anyone realized she was in trouble.

Emergency room workers will be the first line of defense in the event of a disease pandemic and will be forced to deal with the chaos that inevitably comes with treating thousands of sick and dying.

About a year ago no doctor would believe that it was possible, but today it is becoming a mainstream procedure. According to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), 2006 statistics from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) indicate that there were an estimated 1.1 million people treated at U.S. hospital emergency rooms for head injuries related to common products found around the home. The number of head injuries is actually greater, since many people are treated at doctor’s offices, immediate care centers, or do not seek any medical treatment.
