Production Of Merry Widow Opens At London Coliseum

The Merry Widow was a huge success when premiered in Vienna in 1905 and remains one of the most enduringly popular of all operettas and was later filmed by Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer (1934) starring Jeanette MacDonald in the title role opposite Maurice Chevalier as Count Danilo. Lehár's tale of romance, passion, high society and amorous intrigue, The Merry Widow is set in the heady champagne days of decadent, nineteenth-century Paris.

Alex Jennings Joins English National Opera

Alex Jennings, currently starring in Present Laughter at the National Theatre, will make his English National Opera debut as Doctor Pangloss/Voltaire in Robert Carsen’s new production of Leonard Bernstein’s Candide, part of the ENO 2007/08 SkyArts Season. This ENO co-production with the Theatre du Chatelet, Paris and Teatro alla Scala, Milan, where it played to great acclaim, opens June 23, 2008 at the London Coliseum for 13 performances only.

BBC, ENO Offer UK Video Streaming Of Opera Online

English National Opera and BBC Radio 3 are to video stream a performance of ENO’s new production of Carmen – currently in rep at the London Coliseum – on Saturday 3 November at 6.30pm. Carmen Online will be the first time that BBC Radio 3 has video streamed an opera, and the first time a UK opera house has offered a complete production online.

The Metropolitan Opera and English National Opera (ENO) are joining forces for two collaborations in future seasons: a new co-production of John Adams’s Doctor Atomic, directed by Penny Woolcock, and a co-production of the new opera by Osvaldo Golijov and Anthony Minghella that has been commissioned by the Met.

June Whitfield Joins Cast Of On The Town At London Opera

June Whitfield is to play the role of Madame Maude P. Dilly in ENO's smash hit production of the original 'New York, New York' musical ON THE TOWN. The production, which broke Box Office records in 2005, returns to the London Coliseum for 20 performances only from 20 April-25 May 2007.

English Opera Wins Opera Awards

English National Opera is delighted to announce that for the second consecutive year the Company has won both opera awards in the Oliviers. At the 2007 Olivier Awards ceremony, presented by the Society of London Theatre last night, ENO's production of Janáček's Jenůfa, staged by David Alden, received the award for Best New Opera Production and Amanda Roocroft received the award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera for her performance in the title role of Jenůfa.

On the heels of the success of their first co-production, Puccini's Madam Butterfly, English National Opera (ENO) and the Metropolitan Opera announce that they will co-produce Philip Glass's Satyagraha. The new production is a collaboration with director Phelim McDermott and designer Julian Crouch, two of the three co-artistic directors of the visionary British theatre company, Improbable. It opens at ENO in April 2007 and at the Met in April 2008.
