Scientists at UCLA and NYU have deciphered the genome of the parasite causing trichomoniasis, and their research may lead to new approaches to improve the diagnosis and treatment of this common sexually transmitted disease.

It's the world's most common non-viral sexually transmitted infection. There are an estimated 8 million cases of trich -- pronounced "trick" -- a year in North America and 170 million cases worldwide. But in a cover article in the January 12, 2007, issue of Science, researchers reveal many of trich's tricks.

Researchers have decoded the genetic makeup of the parasite that causes trichomoniasis, one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs), revealing potential clues as to why the parasite has become increasingly drug resistant and suggesting possible pathways for new treatments, diagnostics and a potential vaccine strategy.
