The U.S. Senate passed landmark legislation Thursday. The bill makes violence against gays and lesbians a federal crime.

A leading U.S. civil rights organization says anti-immigrant sentiment is fueling a nationwide increase in hate groups and hate crimes against Latinos.

Over 7,700 hate crimes were committed in the US last year, according to an FBI report, including violent attacks based on race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation and disability.
