Serbian President Boris Tadic says he will ask the international community to delay further talks on the future status of Kosovo for at least 10 days to allow Serbia's new parliament to convene.

The United States Friday called the newly released Kosovo settlement plan of U.N. envoy Martti Ahtisaari fair and balanced, and urged authorities in both Serbia and Kosovo to work toward a final settlement. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is consulting European colleagues on the next steps in the process.

Serbian leaders have rejected a UN proposal on the status of Kosovo. The draft proposal , presented by United Nations envoy Martti Ahtisaari today, supports giving Kosovo access to international institutions, but does not explicitly refer to "independence."
