There is quite a bit of tradition behind the cutting of the cake when the Marine Corps celebrates its 234th birthday Tuesday, November 10, 2009. Since 1921 the birthday of the Marine Corps has been officially celebrated each year on November 10 because, on that date in 1775, an organization of Marines was authorized with a historical resolution by the Continental Congress.

In a speech at the Marine Corps base at Camp Lejeune, N.C., President Barack Obama outlined his plans for troop withdrawal from Iraq, as well as (and this drew the most applause) new perks for the military, including a pay raise.

Missing pregnant marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead. Her body has not yet been recovered. A witness phoned detectives and told them she was dead and where her body was buried.
