Researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have discovered a novel cause of iron overload in patients with thalassemia, a genetic blood disorder that causes anemia. According to the study, thalassemia patients overproduce a protein called GDF15, which suppresses the production of a liver protein, hepcidin, which in turn leads to an increase in the uptake of dietary iron in the gut.

Dutch researcher Terry Derks has demonstrated that the metabolic disease MCAD deficiency can be detected at an early stage. At present the disease is only found in half of the expected number of patients. With the help of a new screening method, all newborns can now be screened. Young children can develop complications due to MCAD deficiency if this is not diagnosed on time. Where early detection fails, it is too late too intervene in a quarter of cases.

Atherosclerosis is a disease of the blood vessels that causes many problems, including heart attacks. It is caused by a buildup of fat (lipid)-containing macrophages (the rubbish-collecting cells of the immune system) in the arteries. The presence in the blood of high levels of remnant lipoproteins, cholesterol-rich particles that are produced as the large lipoprotein complexes that transport lipids around the body are degraded, potently promotes the development of atherosclerosis.
