A reemergence of Latin American films on the international scene in recent years has resulted in a wealth of vivid, groundbreaking work. The Walker Art Center's Cinemateca film series begins its run of screenings on the last Friday of each month with a new, award-winning work from Brazil, Karim Aïnouz's Love for Sale: Suely in the Sky, on Friday, January 25, 7:30 pm.

The Minnesota Orchestra continues its three-week film music series with a screening of the Russian silent movie The Battleship Potemkin (1925)—labeled “one of the fundamental landmarks of cinema” by film critic Roger Ebert—with the Orchestra performing a live score compiled from works by Shostakovich. Finnish conductor Esa Heikkilä makes his first Minnesota Orchestra appearance leading the performance.

The Minnesota Orchestra’s three-week Sounds of Cinema Festival continues with a concert of film music from Hollywood’s golden era—the 1930s through ’60s—on January 19, and performances of popular film music from the past three decades on January 24 and 25.

Swedish label BIS has released the fourth CD in Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra’s acclaimed Beethoven symphonies cycle, an album that includes the genesis of Beethoven’s symphonic output as well as his nature-inspired Sixth (Pastoral) Symphony.

The Minnesota Orchestra launches a three-week Sounds of Cinema Festival with two screenings of Charlie Chaplin’s 1931 film City Lights—ranked as the 11th-best American movie by the American Film Institute—as the Orchestra performs Chaplin’s full score live, on January 17 and 18. Music Director Osmo Vänskä conducts both performances.

As is fitting for a series that has always brought provocative, exhilarating, unexpected theatrical experiences to the Twin Cities, Out There celebrates its 20th season by presenting four American ensembles new to the Walker Art Center and Minnesota—their breathtaking dance-theater and physical drama is helping point the way to the future of live performance art.

January tours at the Walker Art Center offer a chance to see the latest exhibition Present Tense: Photographs by JoAnn Verburg (opening January 12), featuring the work of the American photographer, comprising approximately 60 works that survey her 25-year career. Patrons can also take in a Frida Kahlo (closes January 20) gallery talk about the artist and her work on Friday, January 4, 6 pm.

The Walker Art Center's Target Free Thursday Nights in January are highlighted by a Contemporary Art in Conversation talk with JoAnn Verburg (January 24, 7:30 pm), in conjunction with the new exhibition Present Tense: Photographs by JoAnn Verburg (opening January 12).

Twin Cities artist Andréa Stanislav addresses the contemporary effects of the 19th century belief of Manifest Destiny, environmental values, and the vanishing natural world in an exhibition opening January 25 at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.

With the Walker Art Center's popular exhibition Frida Kahlo closing on January 20, families can get one last look at the exhibition and learn more about what inspired the artist at the Free First Saturday event Finding Frida, from 10 am–3 pm Saturday, January 5.

More than 70 photographic portraits, landscapes, and still-lifes, anchored by the diptychs and triptychs that have become St. Paul-based artist JoAnn Verburg's signature, will be on view at the Walker Art Center January 12–April 20.

Parents and caregivers with youngsters ages 3–5 have a fun way to find artistic inspiration with Arty Pants: Your Tuesday Playdate, the popular Walker Art Center program designed to nurture creativity and engage a child's mind.
