Tearing into witty and funky new arrangements of little-known jazz nuggets from the 1920s and ‘30s, as well as radically transforming songs by artists such as Prince and the Beatles, Steven Bernstein (Grammy-nominated composer/Sex Mob trumpeter) leads an improvisational nine-piece outfit playing irreverent 21st-century jazz. Steven Bernstein’s Millennial Territory Orchestra performs on Saturday, December 1, at 7 and 9:30 pm in the Walker Art Center’s William and Nadine McGuire Theater.

The Walker Art Center presents the area premiere of Bill Guttentag and Dan Sturman’s powerful documentary Nanking, Wednesday, November 28, 7:30 pm, the latest film in the series Premieres: First Look, an ongoing presentation of area premieres that gives audiences an early look at tomorrow’s critically acclaimed classics.

For more than 30 years, the Walker Art Center’s Choreographers’ Evening has served as the major gathering for the Twin Cities’ vital independent dance community. Witness and celebrate the remarkably diverse range of Minnesota dance—from established choreographers playing with new ideas to some of the freshest talent on the scene at this year’s installment on Saturday, November 24, at 7 and 9:30 pm in the Walker’s William and Nadine McGuire Theater.

The Minnesota Orchestra’s new “Inside the Classics” series, which features a guided tour and performance of one major work per program, launches on November 14 and 15 with an exploration of Stravinsky’s revolutionary ballet score The Firebird.

Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra continue their 10-year symphonic portrait of Anton Bruckner with concerts featuring the Romantic-era Austrian’s First Symphony on November 8 and 9. The programs, which are performed at two of the Twin Cities’ most acoustically rich venues—Orchestra Hall and the Cathedral of Saint Paul—also include a pair of works by the minimalist Arvo Pärt, one of which features the women of the Minnesota Chorale, the Orchestra’s principal chorus.

The Dadaists did it. Warhol did it. Artists from Negativland to Kanye West do it. Appropriation is an artistic practice in which a previously existing form, image, or sound is reused, resulting in a strangely familiar, yet altogether new creation.

Jérôme Bel is back! Notorious for his hotly debated conceptual dance, Parisian provocateur/innovator Bel turned the Twin Cities dance world on its head in 2005 with his highly celebrated The show must go on.

Families can explore the Walker Art Center's latest exhibition, Frida Kahlo, at the Free First Saturday event Viva Frida!, from 10 am–3 pm Saturday, November 3.

Norway's accordion virtuoso Frode Haltli transforms traditional folk sources into atmospheric chamber music. An exceptional improviser and a folk music authority, ECM recording artist Haltli has a repertoire that includes lyrical waltzes from Sweden, free jazz experiments inspired by Albert Ayler, and traditional psalms and ballads from his homeland.

As part of November gallery tours at the Walker Art Center, Gallery Talks on Frida Kahlo and her work, in English and Spanish, will take place at 6 pm on Fridays, November 2 and 30 (English), and at 7 pm Friday, November 30 (Spanish).

The Walker Art Center's Target Free Thursday Nights in November are highlighted by Vamos a celebrar el Día de los Muertos (November 1, 5–9 pm), a series of festivities for the Day of the Dead holiday, in conjunction with the new exhibition Frida Kahlo (opening October 27). Visitors can view Kahlo's famed paintings in the galleries, make art with a local artist from Mexico, and see films that explore this festive tradition.
