EU foreign policy and security chief, Javier Solana, praised Monday parliamentary elections in Armenia saying they were held in line with international norms and regulations, while local opposition parties said the poll was undemocratic.

Voting is under way in Armenia for today's parliamentary elections. About 2.3 million people are registered to vote in the elections for the 131-seat National Assembly. RFE/RL's Armenian Service reported that voter turnout appeared to be relatively high in the morning, with lines forming in some polling stations in Yerevan.

Armenians go to the polls on May 12 to vote in hotly contested parliamentary elections. The outcome is likely to dictate the course of the Armenia's presidential vote in 2008, and the West has pressed for tomorrow's vote to be free and fair.
