A deadly incident in the border region between Chad and Sudan in which a French soldier was apparently killed is highlighting the challenges of peacekeeping in the refugee-flooded, violence-wracked region. VOA's Nico Colombant reports from Dakar.

Britain's foreign secretary, David Miliband, has called on Sudan to speed up the deployment of peacekeepers to the war-ravaged Darfur region.

President Bush is in Rwanda where he visited a memorial to the country's 1994 genocide against 800,000 ethnic Tutsi and politically-moderate Hutu. The European Union has resumed deployment of a peacekeeping force to Chad - an operation that it suspended earlier this month when rebels attacked the capital, N'Djamena.

There has been an explosion at an army base in East Timor shared by Australian and New Zealand peacekeepers. Earlier this week, East Timorese rebels fired at Australian troops southwest of the capital, Dili. The rebels are led by fugitive East Timor army Major Alfredo Reinado.
