Promised Reform in South African Telecommunications Fails

The end of apartheid in South Africa in 1994 brought the African National Congress to political power along with a mandate for reform of nearly all the nation’s institutions, including the telecommunications sector. But “the reform of telecommunications has largely failed,” according to an analysis by Robert Horwitz, professor of communication at the University of California, San Diego, just published in the journal Telecommunications Policy.

South Africa Launches New AIDS Drug Initiative

The government of South Africa recently announced a new plan to combat HIV / AIDS. The plan pledges to provide within five years life-prolonging antiretroviral treatment to 80 percent of the AIDS victims who need it. Currently only 20 percent receive the treatment. Extent of deadly new TB strain in southern Africa not known

There is the unknown extent of the deadly new strain of tuberculosis in South Africa and the region. This problem is a cause for concern, an international health expert said Wednesday. Dr Fabio Scano, a TB expert from the World Health Organization in Geneva, has been sent to South Africa at the request of the government to assist with the outbreak of the extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis strain, or XDR-TB.
