Long before the first penguins are introduced to the Tennessee Valley, a specially designed world has to be created just for them. This process began on paper at the Tennessee Aquarium more than one year ago when the idea to bring penguins to Chattanooga was first hatched.

For as long as man has been exploring the seven seas, penguins have inspired wonder and brought smiles to anyone who sees these curious little birds. Early sailors dubbed the Great Auk, "pen gwyn" from the Welsh term meaning white head. The Auk was a large, flightless bird common throughout the North Atlantic.

A big chill will soon sweep through the Tennessee Aquarium when the latest addition opens in May of 2007. A group of penguins are going to waddle their way into Chattanooga and thrill Aquarium visitors with their lively antics. The "Penguins' Rock" exhibit will feature 2 very active species of cold climate penguins unique to this region.
