FAW-Toyota, the joint venture between China's FAW Group and Japanese carmaker Toyota Motor, reported sales of 372,688 vehicles in 2008, surging by 129% over a year before, Shanghai Securities News reported today.

On Wednesday Toyota announced a massive global recall of three models, resulting in a total recall of 1.35 million vehicles worldwide.

As the global financial crisis is spreading, the Chinese auto industry suffers market downturn and is experiencing significantly slow growth. However, GAC Toyota, the joint-venture company between Chinese Guangzhou Auto and Japanese carmaker Toyota, is confident that it can achieve sales growth in 2009, Feng Xingya, vice general manager of GAC Toyota was quoted by Yangcheng Evening News as saying so.

Toyota Motor Corp may not able to meet its reduced target of automobile sales in the Chinese market this year, the official Shanghai Securities News reported on Wednesday.
