U.S. Puts Limits on Lenders' Ties to Universities

The U.S. Education Department, criticized for lax oversight of student loans, released proposed rules Friday that would set new standards for universities and ban lenders' marketing practices that have resulted, in some cases, in loan company payoffs to university officials, reported The New York Times.

Tragedy at Virginia Tech: Campus remains closed

Two shootings on campus today have left 33 dead. Thirty-one, including the gunman, died at Norris Hall; two died at West Ambler Johnston Hall. Fifteen other victims from Norris are being treated at area hospitals. Virginia Tech remains closed on Monday, April 16, 2007. Vehicular entrances to campus are severely restricted to essential personnel only. Additional security remains on campus as the investigation continues.
