'Flying Fish' unmanned aircraft takes off and lands on water

Flying fish were the inspiration for an unmanned seaplane with a 7-foot wingspan developed at the University of Michigan. The autonomous craft is believed to be the first seaplane that can initiate and perform its own takeoffs and landings on water.

Between water and rock, new science

Water chemistry and mineralogy are scientific fields that have been around long enough to develop extensive knowledge and technologies. The boundary of water and rock, however, is not a thin wet line but the huge new field of nanoparticle science.

Further development of Water Framework Directive necessary

Experts from 20 countries have called for the guidance documents for the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) to be updated. The consensus among the scientists and stakeholders who discussed risks for European rivers at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) last week was that the Directive is a good start, but it needs to be taken further.

Scientists discover new way to make water

In a familiar high-school chemistry demonstration, an instructor first uses electricity to split liquid water into its constituent gases, hydrogen and oxygen. Then, by combining the two gases and igniting them with a spark, the instructor changes the gases back into water with a loud pop.

More oil with hydrophobic gel

Older oil fields often have an increased water production that makes it increasingly difficult to pump the oil up. This problem can be resolved by using a chemical substance that forms a gel between the water and the oil. Dutch researcher Hein Castelijns wrote an experimental model that predicts the placing of the substance and gel formation in an oil reservoir. This can have both a cost-saving and yield-increasing effect.

New paradigms in research of biomolecular composition of water

Water nurtures life in all its forms, but not all water in our life systems is equal. Water in a lake, in the sea or in a cup of tea is different from the water in our bodies. This much we do know. Yet science does not yet have a complete understanding as to why intracellular water is different to other water forms.

Magnetic Snakes Create Water Current

Physicists at Argonne National Laboratory have found that magnetic particles suspended in water and subjected to an alternating magnetic field will form snake-shaped structures that can control the flow of the surrounding fluid.

NASA satellites eye coastal water quality

Using data from instruments aboard NASA satellites, Zhiqiang Chen and colleagues at the University of South Florida in St. Petersburg, found that they can monitor water quality almost daily, rather than monthly. Such information has direct application for resource managers devising restoration plans for coastal water ecosystems and federal and state regulators in charge of defining water quality standards.
