Zoo researchers use electronic eggs to help save threatened species

This is an important summer for kori bustards at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. Four chicks of this threatened African bird have hatched in June and July. Along with the bumper crop of baby birds is a bumper crop of new information for scientists working to preserve the species, thanks to an electronic egg that transmits real-time incubation data from the nest.

Disease prevention guidelines frequently ignored at petting zoos

A new study shows that simple guidelines to protect petting zoo patrons from disease-causing germs found in the zoo are frequently not followed, thus allowing the risks of contracting serious intestinal illnesses to persist. Zoo Atlanta Announces Opening Of Two New Exhibit

Zoo Atlanta President and CEO Dennis Kelly, joined by Mickey Brown, Executive Vice-President Customer Service Organization for Georgia Power, announced today that construction on habitats for two new species is underway at Zoo Atlanta. The two new habitats will be home to a pair of warthogs and a family group of nine meerkats. The warthog habitat is expected to open in mid-May and the meerkat habitat will open early summer.

Zoo Atlanta Supports Giant Panda Conservation

In response to the recent interest in giant pandas, Zoo Atlanta has launched an addition to its Rare Care Program. This addition will allow "panda fans" to actively participate in giant panda conservation. Beginning today and only for a limited time, patrons will be able to sponsor Mei Lan, the giant panda cub born on Sept. 6 to parents Lun Lun and Yang Yang.
