Mercury's surface dominated by volcanism and iron-deficiency

Volcanism has played a more extensive role in shaping the surface of Mercury than scientists had thought. This result comes from multispectral imaging data gathered in January 2008 by MESSENGER, the latest spacecraft to visit the sun's innermost planet.

Samoa reinstated as primary hotspot trail

Anthony A.P. Koppers et al., College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences, Oregon State University, 104 COAS Administration Building, Corvallis, Oregon 97331-5503, USA. Pages 435-438.
Hotspots are focused regions of anomalous intra-plate volcanism, yet the mechanisms driving this type of volcanism are subject to vigorous debate.

Towards a better understanding of hot spot volcanism

Most of the Earth’s listed active volcanoes are located at the borders between two tectonic plates, where upsurge of magma from the mantle is facilitated. When these magmatic uprisings occur at a subduction zone, where one tectonic plate plunges under another, they give rise to volcanic massifs such as the Andes cordillera. Other volcanic chains are formed along oceanic ridges, submarine regions of ocean-floor extension.

Physicists explain dance marathon of wispy feature in roiling fluids

Theoretical physicists at the University of Chicago are suggesting how thin spouts of magma in the Earth's mantle can persist long enough to form hotspot volcanism of the type that might have created the Hawaiian Islands.

The Taupo Volcanic Zone is a region of intense volcanism associated with the subduction of the Pacific Plate beneath the continental crust of New Zealand's North Island.
