Some Say Barnes and Noble Nook Surpasses Kindle

Barnes & Noble opened (or rather, re-opened) an e-book store earlier this year. The expectation was that B&N would, as they announced, support the Plastic Logic e-book reader (Que) next year, but recent rumors have pointed to their own e-book reader. Leaks indicate that this device, the Barnes and Noble Nook, will be announced today.

Larger-Screened Amazon Kindle DX Introduced

On Wednesday, at a press conference at Pace University, Amazon.com unveiled the Kindle DX, with a 9.7" diagonal screen (Kindle 2 has a 6" screen). The new device is aimed at consumers who want to read textbooks, newspapers, or magazines, and will sell for $489 (pre-order now, available in summer '09) vs. the Kindle 2's $359.

When Amazon.com announced the Kindle 2, they also announced Whispersync, which they quite pointedly said would work with Kindle, Kindle 2 and future mobile devices. That hinted at already-rumored Kindle e-reader software for mobile devices, and that promise came to fruition on early Wednesday morning, when Amazon.com released an app for --- what else --- the iPhone.

As expected, at Monday's press event in New York City (at a library, no less), Amazon.com turned the final page on the original Kindle, and introduced Kindle 2. And the leaked images were absolutely correct, as was the leaked price ($359, same as the original).
