The discovery of the presence of airborne asbestos in a middle school in Montclair, New Jersey Friday prompted the evacuation of over 200 students from the school and the school's closure. Renaissance Middle School, part of the Montclair Public Schools in New Jersey, was closed Monday and remains closed Tuesday while undergoing asbestos testing and cleaning.

The Scientology cult's 440-foot long luxury cruise ship, MV Freewinds, has been locked down by public health officials on the Caribbean island of Curaçao, after local contractors doing repair work noticed widespread blue asbestos contamination. One Curaçao paper pointed out that Scientology officials had known about the contamination since at least 2001, yet had done nothing.

The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization, the Voice of the Victims, today announced the beginning of Asbestos Awareness Week. April 1, 2008 was designated as the beginning of National Asbestos Awareness Week by the United State Senate. The U.S. Senate passed S. Res. 462 which states “that the Senate urges the Surgeon General, as a public health issue, to warn and educate people that asbestos exposure may be hazardous to their health.”
