New Study Focuses on Dementia in Former NFL Players

Florida QB and 2007 Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow is the latest star to suffer a concussion in the tough sport of football. Wildcats defensive end Taylor Wyndham hit hard in the chest on third-and-6 play from the Kentucky 9. As Tebow fell to the ground, the back of his head hit Gators tackle Marcus Gilbert's knee. For now, he appears to be OK, but concussions are a worry in all levels of football, as this new study clearly notes.

Gothenburg researchers have discovered a previously unknown substance in spinal fluid that can be used to diagnose Alzheimer's disease. The findings, described in a thesis from the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, will also be useful in research on new medications.

Scientists make Breakthrough in Alzheimer's research

A combination of proteins in the cerebrospinal fluid can reliably identify which patients with early symptoms of dementia will subsequently develop full-blown Alzheimer's disease, a research team at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, has found in a major international study. The results were published in this week's edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

Caregiver Relationship Patient May Slow Alzheimer's Decline

A study led by Johns Hopkins and Utah State University researchers suggests that a particularly close relationship with caregivers may give people with Alzheimer's disease a marked edge over those without one in retaining mind and brain function over time. The beneficial effect of emotional intimacy that the researchers saw among participants was on par with some drugs used to treat the disease.
