The Norton Simon Museum presents The Art of War, an exhibition featuring some 33 government-sponsored posters created for the American public during World Wars I and II. Chosen from the Museum's extensive collection of 20th-century war posters, these vibrant pieces of visual propaganda have rarely, and in some cases never, been on view.

Pasadena Museum Presents 'A Lady Writing'

The Norton Simon Museum presents a special installation of Johannes Vermeer's A Lady Writing, c. 1665-66, a delicate yet captivating painting on loan from the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. One of about 35 known works by the Dutch master, the painting will be on view from November 7, 2008 to February 2, 2009, providing audiences with the rare opportunity to see a work by Vermeer on the west coast.

This year marks the 45th anniversary of Marcel Duchamp’s legendary retrospective at the Pasadena Art Museum, now the Norton Simon Museum, from April 25 to December 8, 2008. Organized by Director Walter Hopps in 1963, By or of Marcel Duchamp or Rrose Selavy—the first-ever retrospective of the artist’s oeuvre—featured 114 works of art, including major loans from Europe and the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Arensberg collection.

Over the course of his art collecting career, Norton Simon acquired close to 50 works by French artist Aristide Maillol, many of which are on permanent display in the Museum’s galleries and garden. The exhibition Maillol’s Miniatures offers a rare look at those Maillol works that are not usually on view, providing a better understanding of the artist’s working methods.
