The results of a study published today in the journal Pediatrics found that one in every 91 children ages 3 to 17 have autism spectrum disorders (ASD). In half the cases, parents report their children's symptoms as "mild." ASD is a group of brain disorders comprising autism and two less severe disorders: Asperger's disorder and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified.

McKinnon hacked into 97 America military computers at the Pentagon and Nasa between 2001 and 2002. The US authorities want him to be tried in America and serve a jail sentence. Autism campaigners in the UK maintain that Gary will not be able to cope with the hard American penal system because of health issues.

Their new study, published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, examined patterns of movement as children with autism and typically developing children learned to control a novel tool.

Pieces in the complex autism inheritance puzzle are emerging in the latest study from a research team including geneticists from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The study identified 27 different genetic regions where rare copy number variations – missing or extra copies of DNA segments – were found in the genes of children with autism spectrum disorders, but not in the healthy controls.

Antidepressant No More Effective Than Placebo For Autistic Children

A government-funded study involving 149 participants aged 5 to 17 finds that the antidepressant, Citalopram, is no more effective than a placebo and has side-effects twice as bad. About a third of autistic children in the US take this drug or others closely related to it.

Autism Is An Expensive Disease In The UK

Research published this week in the Journal Autism, published by SAGE, estimate the annual costs of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to be more than £27 billion a year. The costs of supporting children with ASDs were estimated to be £2.7 billion per year, £25 billion each year for adults. The findings will be presented at the Autism & Employment Workshop taking place today at Goldsmiths, University of London.
